Parent discussion

I spoke with my mom who just turned 50 and it was great. She has worked a lot with the youth of the church and has raised three teen age boys.  We talked a lot about the talk by elder Bednar Things As They Really Are. We talked a lot about some of the examples he used where people were living life virtually and not experiencing. We also talked about being safe with passwords because I think my parents aren't very safe with the passwords they set up. I shared with them some of the ideas from class and it was received really well. She liked the ideas and was going to make some changes.

It's always been easy to talk to my mom and it was no different with this topic. I feel that she's now more educated about the topic and is going to help her youth in her calling. I feel like this did some real good.

I really learned that we need to keep in perspective what is real and what isn't real. I really love Elder Bednar's talk. We are robbing the body of experiences if we live our lives virtually or in a second life. It can destroy marriages and family relations.  I think that's what I saw in the video also. Everything is virtual and not as real as it could be.

As a health teacher I'll be able to teach about cyber safety. I hope to get through to them that life is there and real and you can experience that with your body and not just virtually. As a parent we'll have an understanding in our house about how much internet is appropriate and what can be viewed and what can't. It'll be important to build good relationships with my children and teach correct principles so we can avoid things like we saw in the video.

I feel like most of my family and friends are not addicted to the online world. But as they are becoming more educated about the possibilities they need to be aware of the dangers of technology. My mom and I had a great discussion about Things As They Really Are. I hope to be a good example to family and friends in the future and now.

As a teacher I'll need to help students know what to put on line and what not to. This will be an actual lesson in my class and we'll discuss the benefits and dangers of internet use. We'll talk about how to protect themselves.

Instructional Videos

I really think that instructional videos will be helpful in my health class. There are all kinds of videos out there for healthy living ideas.  My students will benefit from adding to these videos and viewing them.  I hope that I will have access to imovie so that my students will be able to create projects like these for my future class. I would make this video an assignment where they would show me they understand key principles of nutrition or fitness.  They would be able to work in groups to accomplish this task and present it to the class.  I feel like the possibilities are pretty endless with technology like this.

Power Point Games

I learned how to figure things out when I didn't know them. I tried to email the professor and the TA but I needed to get things done. So I played around with the hyperlink and had to figure stuff out on my own.  I consequently learned how to hyperlink within a power point. The only problem I really had was how to set up the hyperlink, but that was resolved semi-quickly.

I plan on using jeopardy to review for tests, or for a fun activity like a pre-test. I imagine it would get kids thinking about our up coming topics and I could find out what they know and learned

Google Groups

I learned that google groups would be a great way to organize information for my students. They would have links to many articles and have all their information in one place. It is very easy to use and very helpful. I think that it would eliminate kids forgetting handouts or misplacing papers. By posting the documents here they will avoid the problem of losing things.

I think if we did a discussion board about a certain article that it would be super easy to see all your classmates ideas and be able to respond to them.  I also feel that it would be a good way to respond to research that kids are finding. If we researched something as a class we could share that information easily.

Limitations might be that kids don't have enough access to internet or computers outside of class.  They would need training on how to use the site. I'd have to be updating it a lot.  I feel that a class website could be easier than a group.

Personal technology project number 1

I learned that Prezi is a lot more entertaining than Powerpoint. I really like it and hope to become better at it in the future. It is very user friendly and all the options were right there at my finger tips. Just click and type and edit. Super easy to use.  I mean I struggled for a minute or two, but got the hang of it quickly.

I could use this for classes that don't like presentations or power points too much. This keeps it flowing and interactive and you really can't write too much text on there because it breaks it down for you and flows to the next thing.

An activity could be where I have my kids make a prezi about a certain topic and have them break down that topic. That's what I like about Prezi. You can start with the main thing and just keep zooming in and writing about that topic and break it down. Great thing. We also could use it to brainstorm Ideas as a class. I could have prezi open and right there be putting down the ideas of the kids.

All in all I thought it was a great feature that I hope to use more in the near future!

Copyright Assignment

I just searched for slideshows that were used to teach something and this was one of the first ones up.  There were many images of people that were famous pictures. There were no citations at all. We don't know who took the photos and if it was ok for the person to use them.  The songs that were used were only used partially, but it was a big part and that cold be deemed as improper use.  Again no citation of who wrote the song and where they got it from. They might have bought the song and put it with the video but we don't know that. They did cite the quotations that they used from the Bible and other people of the Catholic church.

This video cites the song and who it was by in the information box below the video on YouTube.  It also says that the images were taken from the news.  I don't know if this means that they are allowed to be used by everyone, or if the news stations own them and have to give permission.  I think there is at least an attempt here to say that the work is not the author's but it still isn't done correctly.
